Who Is Hawkeye?

One of the most recognizable names in Hollywood comes from the hit movie series, American Pie. Jack Lemmon played a man with the name Hawkeye and went on to star in a number of other films, including Butch Arnold, We Have Something Better to Do With Our Heads, and Jaws. In this movie, he is called “Hawkeye,” and the character quickly became one of America’s favorite sons. The name was given to the actor by director John Ford, who decided to give the role to someone who looked and acted like an army veteran.

Hawkeye is not only a familiar name but it’s also a famous one. Ford had the actor to sign a contract for his film after filming only one episode of the television show, and it just so happened that the contract stipulated that the actor must use the name Hawkeye whenever he appeared on the screen. Originally, the part of Hawkeye was played by Robert Duvall, who had been cast as a stuntman on the show. Duvall wore a suit and a green flight jacket, which is how the film actor got the name. He went on to become a popular actor in movies like Top Gun, Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, and The Gumball Rally.

The Hawkeye name originates from two entirely different places, both of which have interesting stories related to them. The first of these is Texas, where Duvall grew up. He had been obsessed with the Air Force and loved anything to do with airplanes, according to his own biographies. It is said that he wanted to be an air force pilot when he was a teenager, but was told that the required physical requirements were too tall for him to qualify. He did, however, end up with a degree in aeronautical engineering from Texas Tech, and that may have been the key to his choice of starring in American Pie.

The second place the name came from was Hollywood. The director John Ford had decided to name Steve McQueen, after the star of westerns such as The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, in the movie for which he was originally named. His real name was Steve McQueen, but when the director wanted to make the role into a gunslinger, he changed it to Steve. When the film became a hit, and McQueen became one of the most famous action heroes in movies, the name stuck. In fact, the only time that the title didn’t come from Steve McQueen was in the novel A Walk in the Park with Arthur.

Hawkeye, unlike many American heroes, didn’t actually fight in any of the film’s many famous battles. He was primarily a helicopter pilot, although he was also a member of the army and the navy. He didn’t actually fly any combat missions, but he was one of the best gunners in the army, according to his biographies. In some versions of the story, Hawkeye kills a German soldier before being shot down. That is why the name Hawkeye actually stuck.

It’s interesting to note that despite the lack of action in the film, it is one of the most remembered movies of all-time. The film spawned a TV show, a series of books, a comic book and of course, the feature-length animated version. This was in addition to the limited action figure, video game and toy release. In addition, aside from Steve McQueen, no one else from the film is ever given a name that is exactly what they came from (including the pilot and the last four guys you see on the screen). That is part of what makes the film so amazing; the fact that despite how iconic the characters are, there are only a few characters we hear about who actually get names.
