The Last of the Mohicans movie is an adventure and romantic tale that takes place against the backdrop of the French and Indian War. The film is based on the novel by James Fenimore Cooper. A famous writer in the United States, Cooper created the template for popular American fiction. This novel tells the story of a British soldier and his adventure through the wilderness of the North American colonies.
Michael Mann’s film is a historical drama. It follows the adventures of Hawkeye, who is a British scout. He has an inseparable trio of adopted father Chingachgook and his two sons, Uncas and Nathaniel Poe.
As the leader of a war band, Hawkeye protects the other members of the war party. When a Huron war party comes, he leads the band to the safety of the Fort William Henry. One of his men, Sergeant-Major Ambrose, is killed in the first ambush. Heyward is also injured and has to send a messenger to General Webb at Fort Edward.
The British and French both attempt to seize the fort. However, the Huron and other Native Americans are reluctant to enter the fort, citing a spiritual taboo against disturbing the dead. So, the rescuers reluctantly agree to take them to the fort. There, they are surprised by a group of survivors in caves. But Magua, the treacherous native guide, is not impressed by their presence.
After they arrive at the fort, Cora and Alice Munro fall in love with Hawkeye. They are both beautiful and sheltered. Cora, the daughter of a British colonel, is a bit reserved and is not open to the idea of a marriage. Hawkeye, however, is very different. Although he is not Christian, he reveals a spirited and passionate nature. His friendship with the other two women helps him understand that he is not a stooping, meek officer.
Hawkeye is not one to sign up with an army, but he is not against it either. In fact, he supports the interracial friendship between men. Unlike his father, he does not adhere to the Christian religion, but he sees himself as a part of both the European and Native American cultures of the New World. Despite his convictions, he does not bow to authority.
Hawkeye has a very different perspective on the interracial relationship than most people. He objects to it, especially when it involves interracial sexual desire between men. While he supports interracial friendship between men, he has an ambivalence towards the idea of interracial romance.
In addition to the story, Hawkeye is also a character that provides a backdrop to the history of the colony and the Seven Years’ War. He embodies nineteenth-century America’s ambivalence towards race. Through his actions, he is able to predict cultural warfare.
Throughout the story, Cooper makes use of a motif of captivity to describe the Mohicans. In this way, the Mohicans are a symbol of an anti-imperialist cry for justice.
The story ends with a climax that marks the end of the Mohican tribe. But, before the last Mohican is eliminated, it is revealed that the last member of the tribe is the son of Uncas. This avenges his death, but it is not enough to stop the Huron from pursuing them.
