Considering how much we love the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it’s no secret that fans have been eagerly awaiting the chance to play as their favorite heroes in an actual game. That dream finally came true when the hawkeye avengers game was released this fall. However, while the original story campaign has been a lot of fun and the roster has expanded with two new DLC characters, the gameplay felt stale at times, especially in massive fights against Quadmechs and cookie cutter AIM robots.
The latest update may have finally solved that problem and saved the hawkeye avengers. The Future Imperfect DLC adds a new area, the game’s second playable character, and some long-requested features like campaign replay to the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S versions of Marvel’s Avengers. It also makes the hero himself a whole lot more fun to play.
While he does still share some fundamentals with Kate Bishop (such as a basic arrow-based attack system and a katana for melee), modern-day Hawkeye feels like a different character to play. He’s more acrobatic and, while his weaponry still consists of a bow and arrows, it’s all about mastering a variety of trick arrows that can set opponents up for big damage. And whereas Kate Bishop relied on stolen AIM tech to boost her movement, Hawkeye’s skillset is more focused on old-fashioned swordsmanship.
As a result, his combat feels more dynamic and engaging than Bishop’s, and the ability to chain arrows together for combos is an exciting addition. Moreover, his arrows no longer rely on intrinsic energy to recharge after firing and can even be detonated remotely from afar with a skill tree that adds abilities like homing arrows.
Ultimately, though, the biggest change to the gameplay is that Hawkeye’s level progression happens much faster than that of the other playable heroes. The short story campaign was a lot of fun, but I found myself feeling bored and ready to move on after a few missions because of how quickly I could max out his abilities and gear. And the DLC missions that follow feel almost like a letdown because they’re just more of the same: traversing boring stretches of sand in which to clear out AIM bases and shut down their servers, often fighting Adaptoids in droves.
Hopefully the next major update to Marvel’s Avengers will introduce some more new areas and add the kind of depth that the original campaign promised. Until then, I’ll be hanging out with Lucky the pizza dog and playing as my new best friend: Hawkeye.
