Jeremy Renner is one of the most talented actors working today. The Hurt Locker actor is known for his work on major studio films, including Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol and The Bourne Legacy. He has also been an important part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Hawkeye, the world’s greatest marksman. He has been open about his recovery from the snow plow accident that almost killed him in early 2023 and now claims to be at ninety percent of his physical recovery. He wants to return to the role of Clint Barton in the MCU.
Despite his recent health scare, Renner remains upbeat and positive about his future. He recently shared a video on social media of himself training and hiking up a mountain, which is an encouraging sign that his recovery is on track. He also expressed his gratitude to his MCU co-stars for their support and help during the past 13 months.
In addition to his upcoming MCU projects, Renner is starring in the new Paramount+ series Mayor of Kingstown. Created by Taylor Sheridan, the show follows a small town and its interconnected residents. The series has already received a lot of praise from critics and viewers alike. Hailee Steinfeld, who stars in the show alongside Renner, says that she’s been enjoying working with the actor. She said that he’s a good collaborator and is understanding of her lack of experience working on big-budget movies like the MCU blockbusters. She also noted that he knows how hard it is to balance two shows at once.
The third episode of What If…?’s second season saw Renner voice Hawkeye for a short scene. While it’s possible he recorded his lines before his injury, it’s doubtful that he would have taken time out of his recovery to shoot a live-action cameo for the show. However, the fact that he was able to do an animated scene shows that even while recovering from his injury, Renner can still work in the MCU.
While it’s unlikely that he’ll be able to shoot any live-action MCU scenes until at least the middle of 2023, Renner could continue his involvement with the franchise by voicing Hawkeye in animated MCU projects. There is precedent for this, as Michael Rooker voiced the Guardians of the Galaxy in the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special without appearing in the live-action segment at all. In fact, this may be the best way for Renner to remain involved with the MCU while he’s not physically able to play the character in live-action.
