When it comes to the Marvel Television universe, you wouldn’t think a series centered around a superhero known for his bow and arrow would be as much fun as it is. But that’s exactly what you get with Hawkeye, a limited series that combines detective story, MCU action and a charming Christmas vibe. With a great cast and plenty of wit, it’s a must-see for fans of the franchise.
Jeremy Renner and Hailee Steinfeld both reprise their roles as Clint Barton and Kate Bishop from the film series, while Florence Pugh, Tony Dalton, Fra Fee, Aleks Paunovic, Piotr Adamczyk, Simon Callow, Vera Farmiga and Zahn McClarnon also star. The series is written by Jonathan Igla, who has a strong track record writing for Bridgerton and Sorry for Your Loss. He’s joined by Katie Mathewson and Tanner Bean, along with the directing team of Amber Finlayson and Rhys Thomas (who are better known as Bert and Bertie).
The show is also notable for being one of the first to eschew the traditional comic book-inspired look for a more modern style. That’s a decision that seems to have paid off, as the series looks gorgeous with its stylized backgrounds and evocative character designs. It’s an approach that helps the show stand out from other Marvel shows, even though the source material does still touch on some serious topics.
One of the most important parts of the Hawkeye cast is arguably Steinfeld’s Kate Bishop, who plays a much more well-rounded character than she did in the film series. As a skilled badass who’s not afraid to put her own spin on things, Bishop is a fun addition to the MCU. Her chemistry with Renner is top-notch, and the two make an excellent pairing.
Another key part of the Hawkeye cast is Maya Lopez, aka Echo, who’s a deaf Native American superhero. She’s the MCU’s newest hero, and she’s played by deaf actress Alaqua Cox. Cox is a member of the Menominee and Mohican nations and will be making her feature debut in this role.
For those who’ve never seen the MCU films, the basic premise of the show is that Barton’s hearing loss has left him less capable than he was before. He’s a skilled archer but has trouble hearing the targets on his bow. In the TV series, this leads to some wacky hijinks as he tries to get back on track.
The six-episode season of the series premiered on November 24, 2021, and concluded just in time for Christmas. It was followed by the first episode of a spin-off series focused on Cox’s character, named Echo. While Hawkeye doesn’t have the sweeping mythology of some of its Disney+ counterparts like Loki and WandaVision, it’s still one of the more enjoyable and likable MCU TV shows out there.
