Hawkeye: The New Avenger Series

Hawkeye is one of the most important Marvel characters, a grounded and relatable figure who reminds us that the Avengers aren’t superheroes. He’s the stoic family man who stands up for what’s right, even when it’s against a group of super-powered enemies. Throughout the MCU, fans have been treated to a number of stories about the character. But he’s rarely had his own comic book series, which has arguably left his character a little underdeveloped.

The good news is that Disney+ has decided to rectify the situation, launching a six-episode miniseries entitled Hawkeye. It’s based on a short story written by Matt Fraction and starring Hawkeye himself, Jeremy Renner, as well as a young female Hawkeye, Kate Bishop, played by Edge of Seventeen actress Hailee Steinfeld.

In the first two episodes of the show, we get a glimpse into Clint’s past and his relationship with his son and daughter. When Natasha sacrificed her life to save Clint, he was left grieving and trying to protect his family. Now, as Rhys Thomas explains to The Ringer-Verse podcast, Clint’s journey to reconnect with his family will be explored in the new show.

While the Hawkeye that we’ve seen on screen before is a competent, dependable, and hard-working father, there’s something different about his new version. Instead of being a hapless bachelor who spends his days protecting apartment buildings, Fraction’s version is a loving husband and father with a deep affection for his kids and their mom.

What’s more, this Hawkeye is far more grounded and believable than the version we’ve had to deal with up until now. From his grief over Natasha’s death to the guilt he feels over becoming a vigilante after losing his family, Fraction’s Hawkeye brings a much more nuanced and complex character to the table than we’ve seen in the MCU to date.

But the best part of this new Hawkeye is that he has someone to share his love for his favorite Avenger with. In the first episode, we meet Kate Bishop (played by Hailee Steinfeld), a 22-year-old girl who’s been a die-hard Hawkeye fan since she was a child. She’s also a talented archer who has her sights set on pursuing a career as a Super Hero herself.

The pair of them work together, despite their skepticism about their abilities, to stop the Tracksuit Mafia from taking over New York City. The two of them fight off the mafia’s attacks while also trying to find out more about their origins.

Eventually, they discover a secret auction where Clint Barton’s Ronin persona is being sold. In the process, Jack Duquesne wins a sword that will become the focal point of his and Kate’s new adventures.

As they continue to explore their pasts, they meet an old ally who can help them solve their current puzzle. But as they begin to work together, a presence from their past threatens to derail everything they’ve built so far.

Whether the story turns out to be a tragic tale or a heartwarming one, we can’t wait to see what else this series has in store for us. The cast is great and the premise of returning Clint Barton to his roots as a normal guy in a Marvel-branded world should be an exciting addition to the franchise.
