During Marvel’s San Diego Comic-Con panel this week, the studio released a teaser for a new animated short called hawkeye and winter soldier. It gives fans their first look at a new version of the hero in his modern-day costume. The clip doesn’t offer any other new details about the character, but it’s fun to speculate on what could be in store for him.
The Falcon and the Winter Soldier was a great new addition to the Marvel universe with some funny bickering between Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) and Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan). It had a lot of action and was a good way to kick off the Young Avengers team that Marvel head honcho Kevin Feige has been talking about for some time.
But that doesn’t mean it was perfect, especially when it came to certain characters being left out of the mix. It wasn’t just Thor and the Hulk that were missing – it was Hawkeye as well. That doesn’t have to be a huge deal since there are other ways that the series can continue with the new group.
In the show, Wilson and Barnes work together to solve a global threat and it’s clear that there are plenty of opportunities for these two to team up again. But that’s not to say that they won’t get some help from other MCU characters as well, especially with Hailee Steinfeld’s Hawkeye, Ant-Man’s daughter Stature and the WandaVision twins being added to the fold.
There are also a number of supporting characters that will likely be returning for the new season, including Widow and Falcon’s son Bucky Jr. As for the other members who were left out of the new series, they’ll likely be part of the upcoming Young Avengers team. But if that doesn’t work out, then it’s possible that they’ll be featured in another MCU series down the road.
MCU fans are already excited for the next season of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, which was confirmed in May by Marvel’s official Twitter account. It’ll see Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan reprising their roles, but with the additions of Wyatt Russell, Erin Kellyman, Georges St-Pierre, Daniel Bruhl, Emily VanCamp and Adepero Oduye, it’s clear that there will be a number of interesting new storylines to explore.
The first issue of the new series was just published and features a variant cover by Jackson Lanzing and Kev Walker that hints at some changes to Bucky’s costume. The main reason for this is that the character is now operating under his alias Ronin. This was a codename he used in the past when working as a freelancer, but has now been passed down to his daughter. Fans have been speculating that this is to reflect his change in mental state after being tortured by the Soviets. We’ll have to wait and see what other secrets the new episodes will reveal when they air later this year.
