As far as movies go, I think Hawkeye Xtrapper is one of my favorite films of all time. Its storyline is something you’ll never get tired of, its characters are great, and the special effects are phenomenal. In short, this movie is an absolute must-see! However, it has a ton of subplots and smaller elements that don’t really add anything to the film, which disappointed me to no end. In this review I’m going to list those subplots, and hopefully I’ll be able to give you a good opinion about the film itself.
The main storyline revolves around the friendship between Hawkeye Pierce ( Wes Studdard) and Doc Oc (James Woods), who happen to live in trailers for Hawkeye’s company. Hawkeye’s son Sam ( Kriseman) happens to visit them on a rare summer break, and he ends up staying behind with them for a few days. Once there, he realizes that his father has been ignoring him, and decides he wants to be like his dad. He goes off to find his friend, Doc Oc, and the two become good friends.
Soon, Sam learns that his father doesn’t really want to let him spend much time with Sam, and so he decides he’s going to take matters into his own hands… Once there, Sam finds out that Doc Oc has been performing body lifts on people, and he decides to help him out by lending him some money. But when Sam gets some bad news from the body lift agent (abby), Sam decides not to pay him. Later, when Sam’s brother pops by to give him some cash, Sam tells him to get the cash out of his pockets, on his brother’s credit card.
In order to get money to pay for his friend’s funeral, Sam decides to hit the road once again with his new truck. He picks up a hitchhiker (oddy), and soon he meets up with an old man named Frank (Buddy Ebsen). Frank is on his way to an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting, and once he realizes Sam is out here looking for work, he lets Sam tag along. Once there, Sam gets Frank some advice about how to pick up girls, and he ends up falling in love with her.
After stopping at a meth house, Sam gets busted out and ends up in jail. He ends up being transferred to a pen, and escapes when one of the guards finds a gun in his box. He drives off into the desert, but soon realizes he’s not long out of water. Meanwhile, Frank ends up at the same AA meeting Sam attended, and ends up getting a drug injection.
One interesting plot point in this movie is the way some of the escorts are seen to have PTSD after being in prison. I don’t know if it was intended or not, but it’s a good thing that the movie had the necessary genre elements to make it work. The other thing that struck me as interesting was the extreme sports element to the story. Even though most of the action takes place in a car, there is still quite a bit of time spent on bike and mountain biking. The motorcycle chase at the end is one of the most memorable scenes in the movie.
